Salk Wins a Thriller in The Palace

Updated: 56 minutes ago

WALTERBORO, S.C. – The high-scoring, high-flying Salkehatchie men’s basketball team may not hang its hat on defense often. But the Indians did when it mattered most on Saturday, getting a blocked shot at the rim to seal a thrilling 100-99 win at home.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for Salkehatchie, which remained in third place in Region 10 behind Brunswick and Gaston. Salk hosts Gaston on Wednesday night in Walterboro.

The Indians came out with a great deal of intensity and a deep rotation, hitting 3-pointers and pushing the pace, eventually surging to an 8-point lead. But Caldwell, which walloped Salk by 24 points in the conference opener, would not go away easily, and a tight, well-played first half ended with Salkehatchie holding a 52-50 lead.

The second half was more of the same. Caldwell never led in the second half, but stayed within striking distance before a late push drew the visitors within a point. After Salkehatchie missed two shots in the final minute, Caldwell called a timeout to set up a final possession. The Indians switched up their defense, and Caldwell appeared flummoxed but got the ball to their best player in the lane. He spun, but as he went to lay the ball in, the shot was blocked, and time expired.

Salkehatchie improves to 22-5 overall and 7-4 in Region 10 play.
