The Salkehatchie women's volleyball team competed in an incredible battle against USC Sumter last night in Sumter's home gym.
The match started with a challenging set against Sumter's big hitters and scrappy defense, losing to Sumter 18-25. But the girls quickly regrouped and swept the Fire Ants 3-0 for the next 3 sets (25-19, 25-21, 28-26) to take home the win.
This match signals the end of competition play for the Salkehatchie ladies' 2023-2024 season. "I'm blown away by how they competed last night," Coach Aquino said. "They never gave up, even when mistakes were made. They recovered, were scrappy, aggressive, and smart. And then in the 4th set, something happened. We were down 7-14, and it wasn't looking good."
Aquino says that's when future captain Serah Rego stepped into the huddle during a timeout and set the team straight.
"She stepped out of her comfort zone, and let the girls know that now was not the time to step off the gas pedal. We regrouped, reset, and took control, going on an 8-point run to take the lead and the match win."
Coach Aquino has six returners for the fall plus 2 more players signed with more to come. "We're aiming for the conference finals this year," Aquino said.
