The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie volleyball team lost a thrilling five-set match to USC Union on Thursday with a final score of 3-2. The match was a high-intensity affair, featuring point-for-point action and incredible rallies that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Despite a slow start, the USC Salkehatchie squad quickly regained its composure, fighting back to make the game competitive. "We got a slow start, which set us back in the beginning, but we quickly regained confidence and control and began to fight back," said Coach Dani Aquino.

The match saw four straight sets decided by slim margins, with both teams showcasing impressive defensive plays and powerful attacks.

Freshman outside hitter Martina Sommaruga was a standout player, leading the Salkehatchie offense with 12 kills on 36 attacks. Freshman middle hitter Madison Tauber was also clutch, serving up 19 balls and earning three aces.

The back-and-forth battle culminated in a tense fifth set. A few controversial calls in the final set shifted the momentum, allowing Union to pull ahead and secure the victory.

"Union has improved significantly since we last came to play them, so no ball was sacrificed tonight," Coach Aquino said. "But this Salk squad is fired up, and we’re ready to take the win in the tiebreaker match on our home court."

The USC Salkehatchie team will look to bounce back in their next match against USC Lancaster on Thursday, September 25. The game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. and will be played at USC Salkehatchie in Walterboro.
