Salkehatchie Volleyball Team Shows Grit and Progress in Tough Matchup

The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie's women’s volleyball team battled hard against Columbia International University on Tuesday, September 9, in a match that, despite ending in a 3-1 loss, highlighted the team's significant mental and technical growth. The Salkehatchie team secured a decisive win in the third set and pushed the fourth set to the brink, ultimately falling in a nail-biting 28-26 finish.

Coach Dani Aquino praised the team's resilience, noting their ability to stay composed and compete against an unexpectedly strong opponent. "While tonight ended in a loss, this team continues to make progress in their mental game; a goal we have been working at since our first day of competition," said Aquino. "After winning the third set, we knew we had it in us."

Several freshman players delivered standout performances. Middle Hitter Madison Tauber had an exceptional night, leading the team with 15 kills by connecting seamlessly with fellow freshman setter Madison Ayuso. Freshman libero Brielle Krause demonstrated her serving prowess with five aces, while Martina Sommaruga, also a freshman, anchored the defense with a team-leading 43 serve receives and only three errors.

The game's intensity and the team's ability to challenge a formidable opponent serve as a testament to the Salkehatchie squad's hard work and determination. The team looks to build on this performance as they prepare for their next match against USC Sumter in Sumter, S.C., at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 11.
