Salkehatchie Battles Sumter in Saturday Matchup

USC Salkehatchie men’s soccer battled USC Sumter on Saturday, ultimately falling 3-0.

Sumter took an early lead with a goal in the 21st minute, but Salkehatchie settled into the match and controlled play for much of the remainder of the first half.

The game shifted in Sumter’s favor after a second-half penalty kick extended the lead to 2-0. As Salkehatchie pushed more players forward in search of a goal, Sumter capitalized on a counterattack to secure the final score.

“We got on track after Sumter’s early score and dominated play for long stretches afterwards,” Coach Glass said. “The penalty kick was really the difference-maker.”

“This was not our day,” goalkeeper Sergio Ruiz said.

Salkehatchie used four goalkeepers during the match. Cyril Vital recorded 50 minutes in goal, followed by Pedro Duarte with 20 minutes. Ruiz and Jaylen Cockfield combined for the final 20 minutes without allowing a goal.
