WALTERBORO, SC - The USC Salkehatchie women's volleyball team secured its fourth straight conference win by defeating USC Union in three sets: 25-18, 25-23, and 25-21.
Coach Dani Aquino said the squad battled for every point earned.
"Having just played them last week, we knew they were going to bring the heat this time. After the first match, they learned our strengths and weaknesses and upped their game to try to get us out of system," said Coach Aquino. "I knew they weren't going to give us the win easily again. They were coming for us, so I made sure my girls adapted quickly and kept them guessing."
In the third set, Salkehatchie was trailing 14-19.
"They were only 6 points away from taking us to a fourth set, and I wasn't having it," Aquino said. "I called a timeout, changed up the lineup, and gave my girls a game plan. We came out of that timeout and immediately won the point, which changed the energy of the entire set and match."
Star libero Leah Tevid had an impressive 11-point serving streak during the third set.
"We had high energy, pulled through when the score got tight & dominated all 3 sets," she said.
Defensive specialist and Brazil native Alanis Francelino said the victory was deserved.
"We had ups and downs, but we didn't put our heads down. In the moments when the score was close, we fought and got the victory," she said.
The Salkehatchie squad hits the road Thursday for a match against Columbia International at 7 p.m. The match will be livestreamed at https://www.youtube.com/@uscsalkvolleyball.
