Gavin Ward Takes His Talents From USC Salkehatchie to William & Mary

At USC Salkehatchie’s Walterboro campus, Gavin Ward found a place to grow as a student, an athlete, and a person. His time with the men’s basketball program helped prepare him for his next chapter; playing basketball at William & Mary.
Ward, a Charleston, South Carolina, native and business major, played for USC Salkehatchie under Head Coach Matt Lynch. During the 2025 season, his performance caught the attention of William & Mary’s basketball staff. After watching Ward play several times, the college offered him a name, image, and likeness (NIL) agreement to join its basketball program for the 2026 season. It is believed to be the first individual NIL agreement secured by a USC Salkehatchie student-athlete.
Lynch said Ward made a lasting impression during his time at USC Salkehatchie.
“To start, Gavin is a phenomenal person, student, and basketball player,” Lynch said. “He was an absolute pleasure to have in our program, and I couldn’t be more excited to follow his career moving forward. Gavin took full advantage of the opportunity in front of him, both on and off the court, and his journey is a perfect example of everything that is right about the junior college system.”
For Ward, the move represents more than another chance to play basketball. It is the result of the discipline and personal growth he developed throughout his time at USC Salkehatchie.
Ward said Salkehatchie taught him to be grateful for what he has and to appreciate each opportunity placed before him. His favorite memory is simply having the chance to play the sport he loves alongside his teammates.
When reflecting on what helped him reach the next level, Ward credited self-discipline. Staying focused and committed allowed him to continue improving while balancing the responsibilities of being a college student-athlete.
His advice for incoming USC Salkehatchie students reflects the perspective he gained through his own experience.
“Enjoy the journey,” Ward said.
Ward is now following that advice as he prepares to take the court for William & Mary. His story demonstrates how discipline, gratitude, and making the most of every opportunity can help student-athletes reach the next level.

The NIL deal for Gavin Ward is a big deal for a junior college player. It’s cool that his work at Salkehatchie got noticed by a school like William & Mary. I found Meowdoku helpful for following how these transfers and NIL moves happen these days.
