ALLENDALE, S.C. — The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie Indians lost a hard-fought battle to the Sumter Fire Ants, falling 4-3 despite a strong offensive showing.
The match was a back-and-forth affair, with the Indians scoring three goals from the run of play. Joel Carvajal opened the scoring for Salkehatchie, assisted by Melki Rivera. Alejandro Gomez followed suit, also with an assist from Rivera. The third goal came from Joao Maltheus Costa, completing a hat trick of assists for Rivera.
However, the Indians conceded two crucial goals from the penalty spot, which ultimately made the difference in the game.
"Our fouls in the penalty area were the result of effective pressure by the Fire Ants," said Coach Bill Glass. "To counter that, we need to do a better job of keeping possession of the ball on the attacking half."
The Indians will look to rebound in their next game, a home match against Patrick Henry Community College. The game is scheduled for 4 PM at USC Salkehatchie in Allendale.
