Salkehatchie Volleyball Shows Fight in Home Opener Against Paine

USC Salkehatchie Volleyball faced a challenging Paine College offense during Tuesday night’s home opener. Defending against a front row featuring players with vertical jumps exceeding 19 inches proved difficult, and Salkehatchie needed the first two sets to overcome its nerves and settle into its game.

By the third set, Salkehatchie found its rhythm and began converting more balls into successful plays. Competing point for point on its home court, the team pushed Paine to the finish before narrowly falling, 26-24. Paine ultimately won the match in three sets.

“It was heartbreaking watching our newer players allow their nerves to get the best of them,” Head Coach Dani Aquino said. “But even when they may not have confidence in themselves, I have 100% confidence in their abilities. They are all amazing volleyball players, and this is just the first step toward regaining our confidence as a team and as athletes.”

Captain Hailey Stephens delivered a standout defensive performance while playing through an injured quadriceps muscle. Stephens repeatedly put her body on the line to keep difficult balls alive, earning an almost-perfect passing rating in both defense and serve receive. She also finished the match with a 90% serving rate.

Although the result was not what Salkehatchie hoped for, the team’s strong third-set performance offered a glimpse of its potential as it continues building confidence and developing its chemistry.
