The USC Salkehatchie volleyball team fell to cross-state rival USC Lancaster in a 3-0 loss on Thursday, but not without a display of incredible heart and resilience from the young squad.
Salkehatchie battled back from a slow start, pushing the final set to an exhilarating 30-28 conclusion that showcased the team's fierce determination.
"This young team is battling the classic 'Freshman Mentality' where they are slow to start then start to battle when it’s too late," said Head Coach Dani Aquino. "It was a valiant end to a game I wish we had started more fiercely."
Despite the outcome, individual performances were a clear highlight of the evening. Freshman Martina Sommaruga was a dominant force on the court, leading the offense with 26 attacks and an impressive 11 kills. On the defensive side, setter Cheyenne Hammock was a standout, putting up 11 hard-dug balls that kept the Indians in the fight.
The tenacity shown by the team and the impressive individual play are positive indicators of the program's direction as this young squad continues to gain experience and build cohesion.
Looking Ahead The USC Salkehatchie volleyball team's next game is against USC Sumter at 6:00pm at USC Salkehatchie's Walterboro campus.
