USC Salkehatchie Volleyball Shows GRIT in Three-Set Thriller Against FSCJ

WALTERBORO, S.C. – October 6, 2025 – The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie volleyball team demonstrated remarkable fight and tenacity in their contest against Florida State College Jacksonville (FSCJ), elevating their game to push the final two sets to the brink.
Game Highlights
While Salkehatchie ultimately fell 0-3 to a strong FSCJ opponent, the team exhibited tremendous growth and competitive fire after the first set. After a slow start, the Salkehatchie squad rallied fiercely, turning the match into a true battle.
"We started off extra slow, giving up the first set to FSCJ through too many unforced errors," said Coach Dani Aquino. "However, in the following two sets, we began to battle, even losing the final set by only two points: 23-25."
This impressive turnaround highlights the squad's ability to adjust under pressure and showcases their potential as they continue their season.
Standout Freshman Performances
The match was a showcase for Salkehatchie's talented freshman class, who stepped up to deliver stellar performances:
Freshman Martina Sommaruga powered the offense, leading the team with 6 powerful kills.
Freshman Middle Madison Tauber was a force at the net, following closely with 5 kills.
The back row was secure thanks to Freshman Libero Hailey Stephens, who put on a defensive masterclass with an outstanding 28 digs, anchoring the team's defense and extending rallies.
Looking Ahead
Salkehatchie will travel to face USC Lancaster on Wednesday, October 8, with the match scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
